Recently at our Johnson Park Middle School After-School Program, something beautiful unfolded, both on the outside and from within.
Our students participated in a powerful, hands-on art experience centered around masks, but not the kind you’d expect. This wasn’t just about arts and crafts; it was about identity, creativity, and the courage to stand out in a world that often encourages us to blend in.
We started by discussing masks from around the world, used in different cultures, religions, and even celebrations like masquerade balls. But then we shifted the focus inward. We reflected on the invisible masks we sometimes wear, masks of fear, insecurity, or the pressure to fit in, and how those masks can hide our true selves.
Each student was then given a blank white mask, symbolizing that invisible barrier. And from there, they were challenged to design a mask that represented their true personality, dreams, and identity, with no example to copy, no “perfect” template to follow. Just pure, individual expression.
The results? Nothing short of inspiring.
No two masks were alike, just like our students. Every color, shape, and symbol was a celebration of their differences, gifts, creativity, and confidence. We reminded our students that they were born to stand out, that they don’t have to follow the crowd, and that their uniqueness is their superpower. We encouraged them to stop hiding behind what the world expects and start leaning into who they truly are.
A heartfelt thank you to two of our most impactful leaders, Grandpa Bob and Grandma Pat, who led this project with grace, love, and wisdom. Their presence reminds our students that they are not alone, and that they’re surrounded by people who believe in them.
In a world that often celebrates conformity, choosing to be yourself is an act of courage. And it’s that kind of courage that we aim to spark in every student we serve.
